Kidzone

There is a lot going on in and around the Lyng for children and young people, with more and more young families now moving into the area. There’s also local support to help parents find child care.

The Lyng estate has a local youth group, the 5-11 Club, which runs activites and games for children aged five to eleven.

The club meets every Monday, from 4.30pm to 6.00pm, at the church of the Good Shepherd and St John on Lyttleton Street.

To find out what’s going on locally there are several websites you can visit to find the latest up-to-date information. Some of the best of these sites are:

Just Youth, a website for the young people of Sandwell designed by young people, at www.justyouth.org.uk

You can also visit Sandwell’s online youth magazine Voice 21 at www.voice21.justyouth.org.uk  This wide-ranging site features local news, blogs, features, competitions and reviews.

Sandwell Council’s Young People’s Services team organises many events and activities for young people. You can contact them by calling 0121 569 8430, emailing youngpeople_services@sandwell.gov.uk, checking out the council website at www.sandwell.gov.uk or visiting their office at Control House, Shaftsbury St, West Bromwich, B70 9QD.

All three and four-year-old children can receive 15 hours of free nursery school education for 38 weeks per year. This can run over three terms or be stretched out to suit your needs. To find out more about nursery places in Sandwell, check the Sandwell Council website.

Free early education/child care places are also available for two-year-olds from disadvantaged families meeting certain criteria. For more information, see Sandwell Council’s website.

Sandwell Council’s Family Information Service can also give advice on finding a childminder in the area. You can ring them on 0121 569 4914 or email family_information@sandwell.gov.uk
